Eritria is a multifaceted storyteller: performing live on stage, in addition to creating narratives and documentaries. Her artistic style is rooted in simple but emotionally layered stories.
So what happens when an Eritrean and New Orleanian stumble into a biology lab? They create a neurotic and semi despotic creature.
I was named after my mother's country; My American father misspelled it. And I am so grateful of that perfect gaffe.
I've been performing since I was 6. Back then it was just for family, and my shtick was impersonating my mom on the phone, speaking in her native tongue with my aunt, while she bit her nails...and occasionally spat out. She hated it.
After my producing stints with Al-Arabiya and Al Jazeera English, I decided to pursue my passion: comedy. I tell stories about life and people laugh. My narratives have been featured on nola.com and NPR. Yes, ALL stories are true, even the one about Ryan Gosling (click storytelling tab).
I’ve done improv for nearly a decade and have performed in multiple comedy festivals, like Moontower and Women in Comedy with my troupe FEATHERS and Pitts+Riot.
I co-wrote the short film Residual with Jason Foster (and made a cameo). It premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival 2017 and was an official selection at the Always for Pleasure Festival 2017 (New Orleans) and the Hayti Film Festival in (Durham, North Carolina). You can check it out here.
My most recent project, the award-winning short Terry+Sam, is a collaborative effort with Ben Donnellon. It premiered at the 30th annual New Orleans Film Festival and won “Best Web Content” and “Best New Orleans-based Project'' at the 2019's Black Film Festival of New Orleans. We are currently developing it into a web series.
Pre-pandemic, you could find me every second Tuesday of the month at Cafe Istanbul in New Orleans producing a Moth show, an international storytelling showcase.
